Amalgam filling replacement

Amalgam- that is not really amalgam, contrary to common belief – has provoked great dental controversy over the past few years. Numerous articles and studies have been published pro and contra in connection with amalgam. There are people who protect it and there are some who would even ban it. Reading all the different articles and studies, you are easily confused as to what to do with your amalgam filling.

At Budapest Dental clinic, we represent the following point of view regarding amalgam filling replacement:

  • With a new filling, we do not use amalgam
  • We use aesthetic material instead of amalgam that fixes to light
  • In case of a bigger cavity, we recommend tooth restoration with aesthetic inlay (porcelain inlay or molded golden inlay)
  • We recommend the replacement of an old amalgam filling if we detect secondary decay next to it, in this case, the new filling is made out of metal free, aesthetic material
  • We can replace amalgam fillings for aesthetic reasons as well, this way we can eliminate grey colour from inside the mouth
  • We do not normally recommend the replacement of a well-functioning, and aesthetically not disturbing amalgam filling, although these fillings get old in 6-10 years, accodring to our experience
